The Tomb Raider series is taking shape: Here’s the lead role

The highly anticipated Tomb Raider series is about to begin filming, with Sophie Turner set to take on the lead role.

One of the most iconic characters in the gaming world, Lara Croft, is preparing to make her return — this time through a TV series. After a long period of development — and even facing possible cancellation — Amazon’s live-action Tomb Raider series is finally moving forward, with the lead actress and creative team officially announced.

Tomb Raider series is coming
In the series, Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa in Game of Thrones, will portray Lara Croft. Previously, the character was brought to life on the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Despite earlier delays, the production has now locked in a filming date: shooting for the Tomb Raider series will officially begin on January 19, 2026.

The creative team behind the series is equally impressive. As previously announced, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag, is leading the project. This time, she is joined by Chad Hodge, known for his work on Wayward Pines. Additionally, Jonathan van Tulleken, best known for his work on Shōgun, has been brought on board to direct the first episodes of the series.

There are still no confirmed details about the plot of the series. However, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s involvement strongly suggests that the story will carry her signature creative touch and unique narrative style. The casting of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft also hints that the series may focus on a younger version of Lara and explore her early adventures.
