American AI company OpenAI has announced the parental controls feature for ChatGPT. Set to be released next month, this feature will allow parents to link their personal ChatGPT accounts with their children’s accounts.

The newly announced controls allow parents to manage the responses their children receive from ChatGPT. Additionally, there is an option to disable certain features, such as memory and chat history
With this feature, OpenAI stated that it will generate automatic alerts when it detects that a young person is experiencing severe distress. According to the company, this feature was developed to support expert opinions and foster trust between parents and teenagers. OpenAI also mentions that it will collaborate with specialists in areas such as eating disorders, substance abuse, and adolescent health to make its models safer for sensitive topics.
As part of its security efforts, ChatGPT will be equipped with a new real-time redirector. This new system will guide challenging conversations through reasoning models. OpenAI states that models trained with this method apply safety guidelines more consistently and are more resilient to hostile prompts.
In the future, when ChatGPT detects that a person is in distress, it will redirect the conversation through a reasoning model, regardless of which model the user initially selected.
OpenAI has also stated that users can expect more security features within the next 120 days. The company emphasized that these efforts will continue beyond this period, with as many new features as possible being rolled out throughout the year.
The announcement of parental controls came after the first wrongful death lawsuit filed against OpenAI. In a lawsuit filed last week, the family of a young person who committed suicide claims that despite ChatGPT being aware of their son’s four failed suicide attempts, it assisted in his suicide plan.
