OpenAI’s AI-powered video creation app, Sora, is now appearing on the Google Play Store following its success on the App Store.
Sora, the AI-powered video creator that quickly gained popularity among iPhone users, is now set to enter the Android ecosystem. The highly anticipated app has appeared on the Google Play Store, signaling that the wait for Android users may soon be over. In addition to generating videos in seconds using AI, Sora also functions as a TikTok-like social media platform.
Sora listed on Google Play Store
Although Sora is now listed on the Google Play Store, it is not yet available for download. Currently, only users in the United States and Canada can access the “pre-register” option. This suggests that, similar to its iOS launch, the app may initially operate via an “invite-only” system on Android. However, some experts speculate that the full Android release could coincide with the end of the pre-registration period.

The developer of Sora, OpenAI—the same company behind ChatGPT—is managing demand through this limited rollout strategy. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that users are creating far more videos than expected, each of which carries significant computational costs. To avoid overloading its server infrastructure, the company is aiming for a controlled and gradual growth.
Even though access to Sora is still limited, the surreal and captivating AI-generated videos created with the app have already spread across the internet. While this demonstrates the technology’s impressive capabilities, it also raises concerns about the future of video content creation. In particular, the potential legal and ethical implications of producing fake videos using the faces of celebrities or ordinary people are likely to spark long-standing debates within the tech world.
Users accessing Sora via invitation can currently use the app for free. OpenAI allows them to create videos within what it describes as “generous” limits. This strategy helped Sora quickly climb to the top of the Apple App Store charts, and a similar success is expected soon on the Android platform.
